The Little Princess Trust
Nine-year-old Lily Griffin has been under the scissors for a second time to donate to The Little Princess Trust.
The St Peter’s junior pupil, from Broadstairs, first donated hair in 2017 when she had 12 inches cut from her locks. The effort also raised £550.
The second cut took place at the end of May and has raised almost £100, smashing Lily’s £50 target and enough to fully fund one wig and transform a child’s life.
Mum Gemma revealed her own thyroid cancer diagnosis in 2013 is the reason behind Lily’s donations. Gemma underwent a biopsy, two operations, radioactive iodine therapy and has to take tablets for the rest of her life but she is in remission and celebrating five years since her treatment finished.
Gemma said: “Lily has asked to do this again off her own back, which shows what an amazing, selfless little girl she is.”
The Little Princess Trust provides real hair wigs free of charge to children and young people up to the age of 24 that have sadly lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other illnesses. The Trust relies solely on the efforts of enthusiastic community fundraisers.

Lilly Wood-Miller’s hair donation
Apprentice vehicle technician Lilly Wood-Miller is having her hair chopped in aid of charity.
The 17-year old Broadstairs campus student and young leader with 1st Margate St John’s Scout Group will undergo the scissors on Friday, June 14.
The cut will take place at 12.30pm at the her workplace, Kent Car Craft in Oakwood Industrial Estate, Dane Valley Road, Broadstairs.
The hair will be donated to The Little Princess Trust.
On her fundraiser page Lilly says: “I would like to donate my hair to help every child have the opportunity to feel beautiful in a wig if they wish to.

Charity tennis match
Spencer Square Tennis Club in Ramsgate will hold a charity open tennis tournament in July.
Men, ladies and mixed doubles matches will raise cash for Demelza House children’s hospice.
The event takes place on July 6 from 11am.
Raffle prizes and trophies have been doated by local businesses. Entry is £5 and includes tea and cake, Refreshments and barbecue will also be on offer.
All proceeds go to the charity.

Twin town football match
Teams from Ramsgate and twin town, Conflans Sainte Honorine will battle it out on the football pitch on Saturday, June, 15 at Baypoint sports club. There will be a 2.30pm kick off..
The Hotel de Ville which has been involved in the tournament for the past five years. Entry to watch the match is free and all are welcome.
Mayor of Ramsgate Raushan Ara will be presenting the trophies at the Hotel de Ville in Grange Road after the event, at around 5pm. There will also be food and drink.
Ramsgate Society
Ramsgate Society will hold its Civic Champion Awards on June 22.
The event takes place at the Royal Temple Yacht Club from noon.
The Ramsgate Society is very aware of the amount of voluntary work that takes place in the town which helps to make Ramsgate a better place to live and work. Much of this is done by dedicated individuals who give of their time, effort and expertise to improve the quality of life for the local community.
In recognition of this the Society is presenting a number of Civic Champion Awards to local individuals who have contributed to local activities.
June 22 is National Civic Day when over 300 civic societies across the country celebrate the work that local people do in their communities so this seemed the ideal time to hold this event in Ramsgate.
The awards will be presented by the new Ramsgate mayor Councillor Raushan Ara.
Serenaders Ladies Choir
The Serenaders, under their conductor Janice Regan and accompanied by David Ruddock, will hold their annual charity concert on Saturday, July 6 at 7.30pm at St Phillip’s Church in Cliftonville, Tickets £4 (conc. £3.50) There will be a collection for local youth charities. Margate Civic Society
This year’s Town Pride Awards, held on May 9, was a resounding success and very well supported once again and incorporated a cheque presentation (on behalf of Arnold Schwartzman OBE, RDI and the Society) to Uwe Derksen, Director of The Margate School.
Annual Continental Trip
On May 21, a group of us also went on a day trip to Boulogne (organised with Carol Peters) which was thoroughly enjoyable. During the day we visited the local attractions and still found ample time for a meal and a few glasses of wine! (Group Photo attached).
Blue Plaque Leaflet
Our Blue Plaque leaflets are on now sale for just 50p per copy. This leaflet has been designed by our Treasurer/Web Master: Mike Wilton and sponsored by our President: Ralph Handscomb, so if anyone wishes to purchase a copy, these will be available on Civic Day. All proceeds raised will go towards funding our other activities.
National Civic Day: Saturday, June 22, 10am-4pm
Saturday, 22 June, is the 9th National Civic Day which is a celebration of what makes the place where we live attractive, enjoyable and distinctive and this year, Margate Civic Society have decided to celebrate the continuing regeneration of the Cliftonville Conservation Area and steward 12 Arthur Road, Cliftonville (which received a plaque at last year’s Town Pride Awards). Some of the Committee members are stewarding throughout the day and this is an excellent opportunity for Members and the local community to visit this beautifully restored late Victorian house (which is part of the Dalby Square Townscape Heritage Initiative) and will be open for public display. Those who have visited before, will be pleased to see that the ground floor of the house has now been decorated with other works also carried out, so well worth a second or even a third visit!
Entrance is free and all are most welcome. During the afternoon, there will also be ample opportunity for visitors to find out more as well as how to become a member, should they so wish. We hope you will give your support and look forward to seeing you there!

After our summer recess: the first meeting of the next season will be held at 7:30pm on Thursday, October 3 at The Walpole Bay Hotel and will incorporate our Annual General Meeting, followed by guest speaker: Amber Butchart (fashion historian and author working across cultural heritage, broadcasting and academia). Thanet Speakers Club
Thanet Speakers Club is based in Ramsgate, and meets at the Royal Temple Yacht Club on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month.
The Club is part of a national group called the Association of Speakers Clubs, with over 100 clubs based all over the country. Each club shares a clear objective: to practice and improve people’s ability to speak in public.
Promoting confidence and quality, Thanet Speakers Club provides a safe environment to practice speeches, structure a speech and improve the speaker’s ability to be able to stand in front of people and speak confidently.
Thanet Speakers Club has nurtured and supported some speakers who have gone on to win regional and national trophies.
Meeting on a regular basis on second and fourth Thursday, between 8pm and 10pm the club has an informal, friendly approach and always provides an evening of entertainment, educational value and high standards.
Attending the club on your first night, you can simply observe or join in if you want to.
The evening is usually broken up in to two sections, in the first half, there may be an activity or a prepared speech from a club member.
In the second half there is a topics section which enables members to take part in an impromptu session. Both section are designed to build confidence and practice public speaking skills.
With a wedding coming up, a work presentation, a university/college viva Thanet Speakers will help and assist in supporting the structure and opportunity to improve the speech technique and approach
