A pupils’ sports crew is helping plan and lead the way with a range of activities and events for children at Chilton Primary School in Ramsgate.

This academic year there are two captains and nine ambassadors who are helping the PE team with the development of school sport.

Their roles are varied and important. Captains Jack and Hope said: “There are a lot of different types of sporting activities at Chilton. Our role together with the ambassadors is to help make sure everyone enjoys a variety of activities throughout the year for fitness and fun.”

The team help to plan and deliver ActivePlay, a timetable for lunchtimes that encourages all children to become involved at a level that suits them best.

As well as having a crucial role in the smooth running of the annual sports day, the crew from Year 6 want to raise participation in clubs and competitions, as well as promoting organised after school sporting activities.

An initiative to encourage children and parents to walk to school one day a week at least – WOW, Walk on Wednesday – is another part of the group’s programme, along with recording Chilton’s 1K a Day scheme where pupils complete laps of the field and playground.

This encourages children to be active, adopt healthy lifestyles and demonstrates how exercise is also important for mental as well as physical health.

Sports coach Emma Knight said: “The team members are already showing dedication to the roles they have to play in school. They are very clear that they want to motivate and encourage teams and individuals and to represent the school, their fellow pupils and the staff.”

The school’s sports values of respect, teamwork, honesty, determination, passion and self-belief not only at school, but in competition are important says Head of School Kate Law.

She added: “These are fine attributes for all of our pupils and the sports captains and ambassadors are a great asset to our school community. They work hard together and really are very passionate about their roles that embraces the Chilton sport-for-all value.”

Chilton Primary holds the School Games Mark gold award from a government-led scheme that rewards schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.

Chilton Sports Captains for 2019-20 are Hope and Jack; the Sports Ambassadors are Ruby, Dylan, Jack, Mark, Tia, Daniel, Ava, Mimi and Evan.
