Tesco Extra at Westwood will reopen its doors tomorrow (March 20) from 6am.

The store in Margate Road closed on March 10 following damage to the roof by high winds.

The store had to be evacuated during the morning when gusts ripped off a portion of the canopy which, in turn, damaged the roof.

Surplus food was donated to local charities and groups such as newly opened The Kitchen CT9 in Cliftonville through its Community Food Connection scheme. Another 3,000 trays were taken to other branches.

Store manager Stacey Lambert has confirmed the shop is ready to reopen although repairs will continue for some weeks to come.

She said: “The front canopy damaged the roof so we have some 200 tonnes of scaffolding up and there is a lot of manpower carrying out the work but this won’t impact on customers.”

The high winds also caused disruption with isle-wide power cuts and low pressure, or no water at some properties, due to the impact on the isle’s booster station.
