A man’s body was recovered from the sea at Botany Bay yesterday (September 27) following two multi-agency responses to reports of a person in difficulty in the water.
The Coastguard helicopter and teams from Margate and Herne Bay, Margate RNLI, police and paramedics were first called out at 11.10am and carried out an extensive search.
No-one was found to be in difficulty but a second call then came in at 1.20pm and sadly a local man in his 70s was confirmed deceased.
A Kent Police spokesperson said: “Kent Police was called at 1.22pm on Sunday 27 September to reports of a body in the sea near Marine Drive, Broadstairs.
“Officers and other emergency services attended the scene and a local man in his 70s was confirmed to be deceased.
“His next of kin has been informed. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report is being completed for the coroner.”
A HM Coastguard spokesperson said: “HM Coastguard received a report at around 1:20pm (27 September) of a possible person in difficulty in the water at Botany Bay, Kent.
“An HM Coastguard helicopter, Margate and Herne Bay Coastguard Rescue Teams, Margate RNLI Lifeboat, South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Police were sent.”
