Kent County Council is due to begin pavement improvement works on Ramsgate Road in Margate.
The scheme will involve sections of footpath between St Peter’s Road and Perkins Avenue rebuilt and resurfaced, helping to improve one of the area’s busiest walking routes.
Work is due to start on Monday 5 October and is expected to take around eight weeks to complete.
Ramsgate Road is used every day by local residents, school pupils and families, hospital staff and visitors, public transport users and people travelling to businesses along the route. Over time, sections of the footpath have become worn and uneven and now need replacing.
The works will involve removing the existing surface, rebuilding the footpath where needed and laying a new asphalt surface. Vehicle crossing points will also be renewed and some kerbs reset.
Temporary lane closures will be needed at different stages of the project. These closures will give construction teams the space they need to excavate and rebuild the footpath, while maintaining a safe route for pedestrians through the work area.
Kent County Council has planned the scheme in five phases:
Phase 1: St Peter’s Road to Connaught Road, from 5 to 14 October
Phase 2: St Peter’s Road to Queen’s Avenue (west side), from 15 to 19 October
Phase 3: Queen’s Avenue to College Road (west side), from 19 October to 1 November
Phase 4: College Road to Perkins Avenue (east side), from 2 to 15 November
Phase 5: St Augustine’s Avenue to Nash Road (west side), from 16 to 28 November (editor note, we are querying whether this should be Nash Court Road)
Throughout the works, signed diversion routes will be in place where needed and dedicated pedestrian routes will be maintained.
Temporary footways or crossing points to alternative footways will be provided where required, with ramps and suitable walkway widths to accommodate wheelchair users, mobility scooter users and people with pushchairs.
Peter Osborne, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “These improvements will make it safer and easier for people to walk along one of Margate’s busiest routes.
“Ramsgate Road is used every day by local residents, families travelling to nearby schools, people visiting the hospital and customers accessing local businesses. Parts of the existing footpath have become worn and uneven, and this work will provide a smoother, safer and more reliable surface for years to come.
“We know lane closures are frustrating and will cause some disruption while the work is being carried out. However, they are necessary to allow our teams to rebuild the footpath safely and to make sure people can continue to walk through the area while work is underway.
“We’re carrying out the improvements in phases and in relatively short sections to help keep disruption to a minimum, and I’d like to thank residents, businesses and road users in advance for their patience while we complete these important improvements.”
Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the scheme through signed temporary routes. All temporary signs, barriers and ramps will be inspected twice daily by the contractor, and a dedicated traffic management operative will be on site between 7am and 7pm, Monday to Saturday, to help ensure pedestrian routes remain safe and accessible.
Work will normally take place between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Saturday.
Residents and businesses affected by the scheme have been notified in advance and further information will be available on the Kent County Council website.
