Margate features in BBC episode of Who Do You Think You Are with Marvin Humes

Former JLS member and presenter Marvin Humes visited Margate to find out about his great-grandfather

Margate featured on the BBC last night (August 6) on the latest episode of family history programme Who Do You Think You Are?

The programme researched the family tree of presenter and former JLS boyband member Marvin Humes.

Part of the research followed his great grandfather Fred Buckingham who was sent to the ‘Metropolitan infirmary’ in Margate in 1896, aged 6, to get treatment for scrofula, a form of tuberculosis.

Fred was sent from the infirmary to an orphanage after being abandoned by his family. After some troubled years he joined the Merchant Navy and was one of those involved in the Second World War Dunkirk evacuation in 1940.

The ship Fred was aboard came under German attack, killing eight men. Fred dived overboard and was rescued.

The Margate scenes were filmed at the Royal Seabathing Hospital in Westbrook and Margate Main Sands with backdrop shots of the seafront and Stone Pier.
