Broadstairs Folk Week returns with a programme bursting with music, song and dance.
Headline concerts feature Oysterband, Le Vent du Nord, Daphne’s Flight, Kathryn Tickell & the Darkening, Jim Moray, Tim Edey, Jim Causley, Richard Digance, Banter, the Monster Ceilidh Band, Alden Patterson, Jez Lowe, Hill Top Ceilidh Band, Bird in the Belly, Tarren, Harmonia, A J Clarke, Zulu Tradition, Brown Boots Boogie Band, Teilhard Frost, Tin Giants, Wychbury.
The concerts will be in the Queen’s Road Baptist centre and ceilidhs and dances are at the Sarah Thorne Theatre. Special events this year include shows: the Folk Detectives; Shantyskeptic; The New Radio Ballads – “In the Footsteps of Ewan Maccoll.” The London Folk Club Story; Girl Talk and Music Hall.
It’s not all sitting back and watching, workshops include African, Belly dancing, Ukulele bands, a festival choir, songwriting, poetry breakfasts, sketching walks, shanties and knitting. They’ll be a Gentle Ceilidh, supported by Chartwell Boutique Care Homes and a fancy dress Sci-Fi Ceilidh with the wonderful Banter.
Younger folk are well-catered for with the free Hobby Hobby Horse Club at the bandstand with Clarence the Dragon and the Hooden Horses, mascots of the festival. Plus, creative workshops, circus skills and hoola-hooping.
The first ceilidh kicks off on Friday 9th August with the Hill Top Ceilidh band at the Sarah Thorne Theatre and if you have the energy, there’s 2 workshops a day in country dancing, solo clog, lunchtime and evening ceilidhs and a Playford Ball.
There’s free music in over 130 pub gigs, a Craft and Music Fair and music and dance at the bandstand.
And the Folk Week parade takes place on Saturday (August 10) starting at 5.30pm from the top of the High Street at Pierremont Avenue, processing down the High Street and onto the seafront promenade, finishing with a celebration of dance and music at the bandstand.
The Seniors Folk Concert, hosted by Chartwell House and Folk Week on August 11 at 2.30pm, celebrates inclusivity with Gentle Ceilidh with Krista & The Wood Urchins at the Sarah Thorne Theatre. Tickets £5 Book now

Seashore Safaris
Explore Thanet’s chalk rocky shore for its fascinating rockpool wildlife. Join one of the series of safaris touring different Thanet Coast bays to explore the chalk reef and rockpools to see what shore life can find. These events are run with the help of Thanet Coast volunteers.
All events last for up to 2 hours and are suitable for all the family, but particularly 4-11s. Children must always be accompanied by a responsible adult. Suggested donation of £2.50 per person.

The Jam’d

Pegwell Bay Summer Wildlife Walks

Join Pegwell Bay Nature Reserve for a guided walk to explore the important natural history and wildlife of this beautiful coastal wetland reserve. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions about Kent’s biggest coastal reserve and how we manage its’ many habitats. These engaging walks will leave you feeling inspired to do more to help protect our coastal and marine wildlife. The warden will be discussing the important issues that face the future of wildlife at Pegwell Bay and what visitors can do to help our work this summer.

If We Just Keep Going …

The world keeps throwing curveballs; the best-laid plans are thrown into chaos, and Jonny’s plans are rarely that. Stand-up poet, storyteller and lo-fi theatremaker Jonny Fluffypunk is back with a show about finding the hero inside yourself, without involving M-People. Inspired by lockdowns, ancient myths, and Grayson Perry’s Art Club, it’s a celebration of tiny victories.
In the case of bad weather all performances will be moved inside Pierremont Hall in The Chamber Hall. This will mean that there will be limited seating and will be offered on a first come first serve basis.

Noon -1.30pm: Margate Pride Parade starts at Walpole Bay Lawns, before making its way across Margate, and finishing at Dreamland’s Scenic Stage.
1.30pm – 4.30pm (Dreamland): Speakers & Stalls: plus DJs and live music.
Youth Pride: Margate’s first-ever Pride event created by and for 13-19 year olds in the Hall By The Sea. Youth Pride will include shows, crafting, a parent/carer creche plus more from the Be You Project and other local LGBTQIA+ spaces and resources.
2pm: Rally
3pm: Queer Beauty Pageant: Mx Margate will be a take on the Miss Margate competitions of yesteryear, with a fun, queer twist including celebrity judges and epic performances.
4pm: DJs and Choir
6pm: Dreamland Drag Party: Headlining the celebrations on the outdoor Scenic Stage, an evening of top LGBTQ+ talent including the international DJ Jodie Harsh, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK’s Bimini and the renowned Raven Mandella. Westwood Cross is hosting a ‘Tree of Pride’, inviting guests to decorate the tree with their pledges to work toward a more inclusive and caring future.
The community art piece will be touring the country gathering the public’s messages of love, unity, and acceptance on its journey. Guests can commit to one of the suggested pledges if they wish or leave a positive sentiment that feels appropriate to them, such as a dedication to a loved one.
The Tree of Pride will be at Westwood Cross on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th August, and the public are invited to participate from 9:30am – 6:30pm on Saturday and 10am – 4pm on Sunday.

Ramsgate Week
August 11-16, Ramsgate harbour, hosted by Royal Temple Yacht Club.
Visitors are welcome to come and absorb the views from Royal Temple Yacht Club and take a break from all the action or wander around the harbour admiring the vessels.
Ramsgate week is often referred to as a friendly alternative to Cowes week which is one of the longest running regular regattas in the world that takes place on the Solent near the Isle of Wight.
Competitors from France, Holland, Belgium and the UK will be taking part.
Look out for afternoon and evening music performances from Two’s Company, Vertigo Park, The Hudson Band and more
Royal Temple Yacht Club was founded in 1857 by a group of yachtsmen sailing from the Temple Steps on the river Thames. The first Ramsgate Week regatta was launched in 1898.
