Children at St Nicholas at Wade CE Primary have plenty to smile about – they are experts in keeping their teeth in tip-top condition.
Year 4 pupils in Beech class welcomed a dentist into school for special in-depth learning session about their amazing teeth and the part they play in maintaining a healthy and happy body.
The group learned lots of fun and fascinating facts about why our teeth are so important and how we use them every day. They explored the different types of teeth in their mouths and found out that each one has a very important job to do. From biting and cutting food to tearing and grinding, teeth all work together as a team to help us eat and speak.
The class also became tooth-care experts, discussing how to keep teeth healthy and strong, including the importance of brushing teeth carefully, looking after gums, making healthy choices and visiting the dentist regularly.
They discovered what can happen when plaque and sugary foods can cause problems such as tooth decay and cavities. This helped pupils understand the importance of their daily tooth-brushing routine.
Head Teacher Taralee Kennedy said: “The session was made even more exciting as children had the opportunity to look at and explore a range of different resources. These helped them to investigate, ask questions and develop a deep understanding of tooth care.
“Beech Class were brilliant listeners and enthusiastic learners throughout the session. There were lots of interesting questions, wonderful discussions and plenty of smiles along the way.
“It left our children feeling inspired to put their new knowledge into practice and give their teeth the care they deserve.”
The session is part of a term-long topic called Burps, Bottom and Bile which is a voyage of discovery to investigate the busy world inside the body. This includes following a tasty treat as it makes its way through the digestive system, helped by some mouth-watering saliva; and making a working model of the digestive system and using it to persuade others to eat healthily.
Mrs Kennedy added: “It was a great start to an important and wide-reaching topic that affects everyone. The visit strongly underlines our ethos of bringing in experts for our children to meet and learn from face to face wherever possible to broaden their learning scope.”
