‘Citizen Smith’ actress and former Ramsgate resident Cheryl Hall has died at the age of 76.
Her passing was announced on social media by former partner, actor Robin Askwith.
Born in London in 1950, Cheryl first appeared on TV in the early 70s, including a spot on an episode of ‘On the Buses.’
She later had roles in ‘Bless This House’ opposite Sid James, and in 1973, appeared in Doctor Who.
Cheryl was probably best known as Shirley Johnson in ‘Citizen Smith,’ which ran on the BBC from 1977 to 1979. She starred opposite her real-life husband at the time, Robert Lindsay who starred as young Tooting activist Wolfie Smith. They divorced in 1980.
There were also roles in The Bill, EastEnders Inspector Morse and Silent Witness.
Cheryl was also involved in politics with the Labour Party and was leader of the group at Kent County Council after winning a seat in May 1993 with 42% of the vote as the Labour candidate for Ramsgate South on Kent County Council.
She also stood as the Labour Party’s parliamentary candidate for Canterbury at the 1997 general election.
She lost her KCC seat in the 2001 election.
Cheryl owned a home in Pegwell during the 1990s and early 2000s.
In a post on X, Robin Askwith said: “What a force of nature she was… A really innovative working class charismatic actress coming out of the late 60s. Brave in every way and now I have the sad news she has passed away.
“ I am devastated…she was my beginning… RIP Cheryl Hall.”
