A Ramsgate bakery shop owner has expanded to launch a wholesale arm to the business.
Tommy Roost-Baker, who took the helm of Tommy’s Bakery at the start of 2025, has invested in new machinery as demand for wholesale of his bread, rolls and other goods from cafes, cake sheds and market stalls grows.
The dad-of-two has been working behind the scenes to perfect the process but officially launched this week. He has created a new app where businesses can view items and make wholesale orders for pick up and hopes to eventually expand even more to create a delivery service.
The 31-year-old said: “I had been in wholesale a bit when I used to work at Crusties and quite a few people were asking me about it.
“So, I have bought some new machines. I was measuring, cutting and rolling by hand but now have a machine where I can put the dough in and it rolls 30 balls of dough for me in seconds.
“I’ve also got a new dough mixer as the one I had wasn’t really meant for dough so I invested in a proper mixer and I am due to pick up a bread slicer.
“So, that all saves time and gives me more capacity.
“I’ve created an app that businesses can access, browse, order, and also receive updates and pictures when their order is accepted through to completion.
“Being the only baker is a little daunting but I have other bakers ready to back me up should things get out of control and then the next thing will be sorting out a delivery route as it is pick up only at the moment.”
Several businesses are already taking advantage of the new service, including Violet’s in St Lawrence, Pitchers Preserves and Bun in the Oven with further interest from Borgyn and Bakes in Westgate.
Tommy, who trained at Thanet College before working at businesses including Crusties and then going from kitchen porter to chef at Age and Son, has roots with the bakery as nan Rose worked at the Belmont Road store for some 26 years with previous owners.
His parents then took it on until deciding last year to concentrate on their other outlet, while Tommy- who had been working with them- took over at Belmont Road.
