Work has now started on the external restoration of Radford House, owned by Ramsgate Town Council, marking a significant milestone in the building’s transformation into a vibrant community facility.
The works at the former fire station in Effingham Street are being undertaken by BW May & Sons Ltd, the specialist contractor appointed following a competitive tender process.
The external refurbishment programme will focus on protecting and restoring the historic building, helping to secure its future and preparing the way for the next phases of the wider redevelopment project.
Radford House is being developed as a community and enterprise hub, providing a safe, creative and inclusive space that responds to local needs and supports a range of community-focused activities and services.
The council has worked closely with project consultants and partners over recent months to complete the design, procurement and approval processes necessary to bring the project to this stage. The start of construction represents the first visible step in bringing the building back into active use.
Ramsgate Town Council bought the former fire station building in 2019 following a bequeathed estate from resident Mr Radford. It has been used for community activities while awaiting restoration.
The property consists of three floors – the ground area was used for the fire engines before KFRS moved to a purpose built site in Newington Road, a second floor with a kitchen and the upper floor which was sleeping quarters.
Councillor Anne-Marie Nixey, Chair of Asset Management Committee and lead for Radford House, said: “The start of works at Radford House is an exciting moment for Ramsgate. This building has stood at the heart of the community for generations, and we are delighted to see work now underway to secure its future.
“Radford House has enormous potential and this project will help create a welcoming space that supports residents, community groups and local organisations for many years to come.”
Councillor Steve Albon, Chair of Ramsgate Town Council, added: “Reaching this stage is the result of a great deal of work by officers, consultants and members over the past few years.
“We are pleased to have BW May & Sons on site and look forward to seeing the project progress. While there is still much to do, the commencement of external works is a significant step towards bringing this important community asset back into use.”
The council has given thanks to neighbouring residents and businesses for their patience and understanding while the works are carried out.
Measures have been put in place to minimise disruption wherever possible.
The next stage of work will be agreed and tender for the package of internal works, which the council will do this month.
The Effingham Street property was originally a private house belonging to Rear Admiral William Fox. In 1905 Ramsgate Corporation bought the property and converted it into a fire station and the town library and Clarendon House girl’s school were built in the grounds. The station was opened in October 1905 by the Mayor.
