A group of veterans, residents and staff from G4S Patient Transport came together last week to support a community project at Maurice House and Lodge in Broadstairs.
The volunteer team, organised by East Kent Mind’s Armed Forces Connector, Karen Brinkman, spent the day tidying and improving the Royal British Legion war memorial garden, helping to create a welcoming and peaceful space for residents and visitors alike.
Karen said: “Taking part in outdoor activities such as gardening is often said to be beneficial for mental health, so it was an honour to bring together these 12 volunteers. A huge thank you to everyone involved. I think it’s safe to say we had a laugh whilst making a difference.”
As well as working in the garden, volunteers were given a tour of Maurice House and Lodge by manager Tracey Tremble, sparking discussions about future support and volunteering opportunities at the site.
Debbie Fassam, Relationship Manager at G4S, said: “Supporting our veterans and promoting mental health and wellbeing through initiatives like East Kent Mind is incredibly important to us at G4S. Spending time revitalising outdoor spaces not only honours those who served but also creates a peaceful, therapeutic environment for the residents.”
The project highlights the positive impact of bringing people together, helping to reduce isolation, strengthen friendships and improve wellbeing, while making a valuable contribution to the local community.
The Armed Forces Connector role is funded by the Veterans’ Foundation.
