A Thanet photographer is exhibiting a photo essay exploring invisibility, aging and the cost of memory loss within modern Britain.
An Afternoon Round My Nan’s by Alanna Georgette charts the life of her own nan, from a showbiz career to living with dementia.
Alanna said: “My nan lived a dazzling life as a singer and performer, always surrounded by colour, costumes and stage lights. Today, she is living with dementia, invisible to most.
“Whilst her memories of her brighter days are still so vivid, her current reality is one of fragility, deep sadness, invisibility, and a complete lack of support – a once vibrant star now sidelined, her colourful past contrasts starkly with her present.
“Through intimate analogue portraits, memorabilia and archival materials, as well as still images from her home, this project will showcase the distinct juxtaposition between her sparkling past, and current isolate reality.
“This work is both a tribute to her incredible life, but also a commentary on how society overlooks those living with Dementia, particularly women, whose lives risk being so easily forgotten.”
The exhibition is the first part of a project with Alanna also hoping to make a film about her nan’s life.
The exhibition is at Pie Factory Gallery in Margate, in collaboration with Resort Studios, and runs from now until the close of day on Tuesday. Opening hours are 11am to 5pm daily.
