Focused WOW Days at St Gregory’s Catholic Primary in Margate are an important part of learning.
They are either used at the start of an intensive topic to set the scene for coming weeks or at the end to celebrate and recap the knowledge pupils have gained.
One recent example saw Year 3 and Year 4 groups stepping back in time for a special day filled with creativity, discovery, and hands-on learning in their Ancient Egypt topic.
As part of their topic in English, History, and Art, pupils enjoyed a variety of exciting activities that brought classroom learning to life including mummification, creating their own cartouches using hieroglyphs and canopic jars, taking part in their own live news report and designing new gods and goddesses.
By combining storytelling, history, and creative arts, the focus day gave pupils the chance to experience the richness of ancient Egyptian culture while developing their knowledge and skills across the curriculum.
Year 3 and 4 teacher Sarah Anderson said “Our WOW Days are all about sparking curiosity and making learning an adventure. We want every child to feel excited, inspired, and confident to explore new ideas — and what better way than to travel back in time to ancient Egypt?
“This is part of our commitment to our school values: for every future, for every child.”
Assistant Head Teacher Athanasia Papa-Adams said St Gregory’s believes in the positive and powerful experience of bringing learning to life.
She said: “The children dressed up in fantastic outfits; they were engaged and used their enquiry skills throughout the day when exploring the hands-on learning opportunities. The event sparked their curiosity and brought the learning from the term together.”
