There was great excitement at Callis Grange infant school this week when a mysterious rocket crash-landed right in the middle of the Year 1 playground!
Children arrived at the Broadstairs school to find a crash site surrounded by scattered pieces of unusual materials — shiny metal, soft fabric, smooth plastic and even something that looked suspiciously like moon rock.
There were squeals of excitement as children shared their discoveries: “This one’s bendy but strong — maybe it’s from the rocket’s wings!” said one budding engineer. Others decided the mystery astronaut must have chosen waterproof materials to survive the rain in Broadstairs.
Armed with magnifying glasses, clipboards and plenty of curiosity, the young scientists set to work investigating what the rocket might be made from. They carefully sorted the materials, describing what they felt like and discussing which ones might be best for building a real rocket that could travel safely through space.
The investigation linked with the children’s Science topic on Materials, helping them to explore how different materials have special properties and uses.
It was a fantastic, curiosity-filled learning adventure that proved science really can be out of this world.
