Three new large-scale murals will be created in Broadstairs, Margate and Westbrook in a project headed by POW (Power of Women) Thanet and Rise Up Clean Up.
The artworks, under project name She Rises with the Sea, are being created to celebrate International Day of the Girl in October.
POW Thanet and Rise Up Residency have partnered up with Scottish artist KMG who will lead the project and create a mural titled The Ocean Wolf and the Selkie on Retort House in Broadstairs. Painting will take place between October 1-5 with an ‘unveiling’ and celebration on October 11.
In Westbrook at 46 Canterbury Road ‘The Shark Whisperer’ mural will highlight the endangered Tope shark, native to UK waters and symbolic of misunderstood ocean life.
As part of the Rise Up residency programme, KMG will also work alongside Margate- based artist Louis Michel to mentor rising local talent Nemi Gardner (aka Autonemy), who will paint the Margate mural, titled A New Voice. A location has not yet been revealed.
POW and Rise Up say the aim is to honour women, promote ocean conservation and celebrate our ties to the sea. Work on the mural will take place between October 6-9.
The works will be unveiled on October 11.
Since 2022, Rise Up residency has transformed Thanet’s public spaces with some 20 large-scale murals, graffiti jams, and artist residencies centred on environmental awareness, particularly ocean-related issues.
Returning as a key sponsor, Natracare first supported RUR in 2022 and joins again to back this 2025 mural series, with further collaborations planned for 2026.

MM Rees – this Labour government will go down in history as the most inept, corrupt ever. They will leave us with a massive debt as they have no idea of fiscal discipline. History repeating itself and I am old enough to remember back as far as Wilson and Co!

Its weird how those roundabaout painters and flag raisers(flag campaign lead by a convicted people smuggler and neo nazi) never offer to volunteer at local schools, churches, mosques, rape/dv centres etc al and actually make a real difference to their communities and country they supposedly love isn’t it? Most of these art works seem to be executed using spray cans. Is the paint in spray cans water based ? Are the empty cans recyclable ?
yup, the large majority of manufacturers of paint for grafitti artists are waterbased (molotow et al) and yes, the tins are recylable at anywhere that does paint tin recycling.
Personally, I’d like to see murals of celebrities who have had a strong connection with Margate over the years, i.e. Chas & Dave, Jim Davidson, The Libertines.
I really like that idea. I’m okay with the existing murals but they can get a bit preachy without, for example, making a blind bit of difference to the rate of environmental pollution which is one of the themes. There’s a chance Chas & Dave might raise a smile from a lot of different types of people …
Great idea Peter. But that will never happen because they don’t tick a leftie do-gooders box. Turner Contemporary, POW and others only manage to do all this stuff from public funding because it ticks a box. None if this would ever see the light of day if it was commercial. So yes, make things of relevance to the area and the celebrities idea is a good one….although I guarantee it will never happen unless that celebrity has a special characteristic.

Jim is a top bloke. I recently wrote asking him to write a little something for my Chas & Dave book, and the very next morning I woke up to a long message that was kind, funny, intelligent and thoughtful.

I met Jim Davidson and Charlie drake at the orchard theatre Dartford 30+ years ago, they were absolutely gentlemen and very funny.
I can’t think of the show they did my brain is old, it was a saucy one!
