Thanet council is asking for people’s views on living in Ramsgate as part of creating a plan to spend £20m of government funding allocated to the town.
The money will be used over a ten-year period from 2026 to 2036.
However, the fund was again allocated under the new Plan for Neighbourhoods and the aim is for it to be invested into towns to create growth and opportunities.
The money through Labour’s new plan will be spent on a broadened set of interventions and has different objectives to the previous long-term plan for towns programme.
Seventy-five towns, including Ramsgate, were granted the funding and specialist support aimed at breathing new life into struggling high streets and boosting local economies.
Residents are now invited to share their thoughts on living in Ramsgate, through an online survey. The survey is open until Monday 8 September 2025.
The Ramsgate Neighbourhood Board will decide how to spend the funding, choosing from options that include rejuvenating high streets, parks, youth clubs, cultural venues, health services, repairs to pavements and high streets and setting up community grocers providing low-cost alternatives when shopping for essentials.
Schemes could also include modernisation of social housing, community led housing, skills support and housing, cohesion and child care.
The Board includes representatives from the Ramsgate community, local businesses, sports and cultural organisations, the not-for-profit sector, and public sector agencies, alongside the MP and relevant representatives from the district, town and county councils.
The council will also invite people who fulfil specific criteria to apply to join the Board. The aim is to ensure that all communities are represented. Applications will be welcomed from:
- Young people aged 18 to 25
- Council or social housing tenants
- High street business owners
- Private sector investors, who are not looking for public/grant investment for their business
- Representatives from cultural or leisure venues
- Representatives from community, cultural or faith organisations, working directly with Ramsgate residents
Information on how to apply for a community-specific Board position will be shared in the coming weeks.

With the prospect of £20million of new government funding, in addition to the regeneration projects already under way, we have the opportunity to make a huge difference to the town. This survey is the first step in developing a shared vision for the future of Ramsgate, ensuring that the funding will improve the things that matter most to the people that live and work there.
“It’s important that we hear from as many people as possible at this early stage in the process. This is a significant opportunity for local people to change the face of Ramsgate, and getting a wide input is integral to getting this right. I would encourage as many people as possible to share their views on life in Ramsgate.”

That way, the Ramsgate Neighbourhood Board will be able to develop a vision and plan for the £20m that reflects what local people think is needed to make Ramsgate the best place for their future.
“£20m sounds like a lot of money, but we need to make sure the investment is used wisely over the next ten years.

The Ramsgate ten-year vision and regeneration plan must be submitted to government for consideration by the end of November 2025.

Get the Port up and running. Something that will bring an industry to the town. Don’t waste huge amounts of money on a Green campus that nobody is interested in or will use
I’d love to see them use some of the money to start installing underground rubbish bins. Other towns are putting them in to clean the streets and get rid of the ghastly wheelie bins. But, of course, that requires vision which TDC has never had.
Or just put them in alley ways like they used to, and get bin men to carry them. If Eddie Yates could do it, then so can them.

My view ? Keep the money in central government until the new Unitary Authority is formed. TDC have proved themselves utterly incapable of handling large sums of capital funding. Look at the debacle of the levelling up funding for a start.
Just buy brown envelopes in bulk it’s how councils work nowadays especially if the councils are going to merge into one unitary authority will need different size envelopes.
Why are the views of those renting privately and owner occupiers not sought? Seems rather exclusionary.
There’s a reason for that. They are already making moves to push loads of the cash to council houses and homelessness so they want people on the board who have a vested interest in making that happen.

I suspect that most of this fund will eventually be swallowed up by the usual consultants fees, feasibility studies, artists’ impressions of projects that will never be built, arts funding etc.
Maybe just put the money behind the bar at Wetherspoons: at least then it will be supporting local jobs, and bringing enjoyment to Ramsgate residents!
Not quite everyone. What about just private ordinary residents. Owner occupiers who witness this towns demise daily. Are our views not wanted? We live here, shop here, dodge the street drinkers, turds and drug dealers daily.

No, this is in addition to the £19.8m Levelling Up and £2.7m Future High Streets funding for Ramsgate. There was a £20m neighbourhood award previously and the MP was saying this money was not there when Labour took over but has now been allocated under the new scheme

It is vital that Ramsgate town ; High Street ; Queen Street ; King Street ; get the benefit of this money . Ramsgate town has been virtually abandoned since the creation of Westwood X . Business Rates ; expensive parking charges ; have ensured the likes of M&S ; MacDonalds ; and a host of businesses have pulled out ; even most of the Banks have gone. This must be reversed and the Council needs to encourage businesses and customers alike . I just hope it happens soon ; a miracle maybe or a complete rethink and perhaps shrink the town and give grants to shop owners for change of use to residential for properties outside the pedestrianised area of town ???

I grew up in Ramsgate during the 60s and 70s and remember how busy and prosperous the town was. Then the cheap flights to Europe took off (pun intended) and the town started to die.
Bad (corrupt) decisions by the council
compounded the situation with a certain pyromaniac adding to the chaos. Money spent on non relevant ideas that left
us with not needed carparks on top of what was one of the best amenities the
town had. I have been back in Ramsgate
for 2 years after living in the USA for
12 years and could not believe the
carnage that has been allowed to
happen. The town centre is a mess, so
many closed and run down shops caused
by the unrestricted expansion at Westwood Cross. How about having police
walking the streets to deter the
antisocial behaviour of the drunks and
drug addicts. Stop or curtail the
building of so many houses that nobody
in this area can afford! Build social
housing for the homeless/low paid
pensioners and veterans etc.
