German discount supermarket Lidl is applying for permission to build a new store on land off Manston Road in Ramsgate.
The store is planned for land at the rear of Tesco and between The Beacon mental health centre and Manston Road.
Lidl says the proposal will create around 40 jobs, full and part time, with hourly rates starting at £12.75 and then rising to £13.65.
Plans for the site include a store with 1,516 sq m sales area, bakery and toilets/baby changing facilities.
Some 122 parking spaces are proposed including six accessible, nine parent and child and two electric charging points. Landscaping is also planned and a new bus stop is indicated close to the store entrance.
There will also be solar panels on the roof.
The first Lidl GB store opened its doors in 1994 and 30 years later there are more than 980 stores and 14 regional distribution centres across Britain, employing over 34,000 people.
Last month Lidl GB announced plans to invest half a billion pounds in its expansion, as the discounter moves forward with proposals to open more than 40 new stores across the country this financial year.

As we enter our fourth decade in Great Britain and hurtle towards a thousand stores, there are still so many parts of the country crying out for convenient access to a Lidl store. That’s why we welcome the measures proposed in the Government’s Planning and Infrastructure Bill – they recognise the urgent need to remove barriers to development and support the kind of growth we at Lidl are working towards.”
Lidl’s say there are no plans to close the current store in Margate Road.
The retailer says a planning application has been submitted to Thanet council.

Earlier this month an application from fast food giant McDonald’s to open a new site at land by the Manston Road Tesco was rejected because the location is allocated for housing and the location is within walking distance of Newington Primary School (within 300 metres) where children and young people congregate, in an area with identified health inequalities relating to children.

How about a drs surgery health centre clinic dentist amongst school. Also a facility for youths desperate needed for rising population in Thanet
The car park and store creates a facility for youths where they can harass people by riding their e-scooters and do their shoplifting at the same time.
What’s that got to do with lidl, vote a council or government to do that ,anyway thats 40+ jobs ,youngsters can go for it they want

I miss Netto, great price on shopping and the quality of the produce was second to none.
