Southern Water has completed an £18 million sewer upgrade in Thanet that is aimed at helping to reduce the risk of flooding in the area.
Some of the sewers beneath the streets in Thanet are more than 100 years old. Southern Water has been carrying out surveys and repairs to make sure they’re fit for the future. Tactics included relining and sealing pipes internally using the latest technology.
Work started in May 2022 and since then the water company has re-mapped 112 kilometres of sewers with CCTV, allowing workers to focus in on 20 kilometre where repairs were needed most.
Sewer sealing involves inserting specially manufactured high strength sock into an existing pipe. It is then inflated and cured in place with UV light, creating a strong, seamless lining.
Teams have also surveyed 500 manhole covers and replaced multiple manhole covers while internally relining 218 sewers and excavating and repairing 38 sewers.
Gus Winterbottom, Project Manager at Southern Water, said: “We’ve used mining experts to access ageing chalk tunnels because they’re so deep underground. We’ve also accessed the tunnels through manholes and used state-of-the-art CCTV surveys.
“The project surveyed and fixed the sewer network across Margate, Birchington, Westbrook, and Cliftonville and this work will help prevent flooding and help the environment.”
Around 65,000 customer letters were sent to households and businesses across 761 locations in Thanet.
Partners that were part of the project included: Kent County Council, Cappagh Browne, Clancy, UK Power Networks, ArcGIS, Conway, SGN, Adler & Allen and TMS (Traffic Management Services).
Has this upgrade taken into account all the thousands of extra homes which are currently being built and projected over say the next 20 years?
Good excuse for them to bump the price up a bit more
And have they upgraded the 18th century sewers in parts of Ramsgate? No. Because as always that is in the too difficult box and located in a part of Thanet not favoured by officialdom.
Has it been completed? Because there are what feels like hundreds of road works still underway across the Isle at the moment.
Who knows, but to be correct some of the sewers in Thanet have been treated, but nit all.As I said have the network of Georgian storm drains and sewers in Ramsgate been separated and upgraded? According to this report the answer is no.
They been doing these upgrades for years, means nothing if KCC don’t clean the roads as the drains block back up again.

What a silly thing to say. You have too much time on your hands
So no more excuses when sewerage is emptied on to Thanet’s seas and beaches from now on, and any future spillages Southern Water can be hit with massive fines and pay for the clear up in future, from no on.?
