Broadstairs has launched what has become the biggest street cricket club in Kent, both in numbers and in talent, energy and some jaw-dropping skills, especially from the girls who have taken the game by storm.
With more than 40 young players registered in the first few weeks, organisers have paused new entrants although people can still register interest.
The Broadstairs Street Cricket Club is run by Kent Cricket in association with Chance to Shine – which brings together youngsters from all backgrounds for a fast-paced, high-energy version of the game designed to be inclusive, fun, and free.
New member Ronan said: “I’ve never played cricket before, but Gladiator dodgeball was the best!”
Street Cricket is about making the sport accessible, There are no pads, no whites, youngsters just turn up and play. In Broadstairs, young people have been turning out in numbers never experienced before for a Kent Street Cricket Club.
The sessions, which run every week, have uncovered serious talent amongst both boys and girls even though the initial focus has been on the fun element.
Sessions include short, sharp games and music.
Club leader Jack said: “ We’ve never had a club start this strong. The number of players is incredible, but even more exciting is the talent we’re seeing already.”
