Fire fighters have given expert advice to young children at St Gregory’s Catholic Primary in Margate.
As part of their transport topic the pupils are finding out about a range of vehicles both familiar and unusual.
One of the most popular was the fire engine – and to help make the studies real a fire crew visited the class for a demonstration and talk about their emergency services roles.
They discussed the varying types of equipment they use, what is the best way to seek help from the service, and what their jobs entail. They also gave the class key safety messages.
The big surprise was when the children were invited to have a close-up look at the fire engine parked outside.
Teacher Charlotte McDaid said: “Our children were amazed to be so close to such an important vehicle. We found out how many wheels and ladders the engine has and what other vehicles fire fighters use to tackle all sorts of emergencies.
“The children were even allowed to try their hand at spraying the high-powered hose-reel jet which was such an exciting treat for them.
“The visit was a great opportunity for us to find out so much more about emergency vehicles and it will really aid our topic learning as it develops.”
Head Teacher Dave Walker said: “This was a fantastic experience that gave our young children the chance to expand their knowledge. They were inquisitive and really engaged with the fire crew who were absolutely brilliant with them.
“It was a pleasure to welcome them in to St Gregory’s and it was our also chance to say thank you for the vital work they do keeping so many people safe.”
