Staff and the Year 6 Head Boy, Girl and Deputies at St Ethelbert’s Catholic Primary School in Ramsgate have handed over a donation to the Royal British Legion after giving up their time last month to go out in all weathers after school to raise money for the Poppy Appeal.
A Royal British Legion representative visited the school this week to collect all the money raised, which was a fantastic £636.63
Headteacher Mr Marshall said: “This is a tremendous amount of money raised for an excellent charity. It is essential that we teach our children about the historical sacrifices of our heroes and remember them.
“This is showing one of our school values of thoughtfulness. Thank you to all the staff who arranged events throughout the last few weeks and thank you to parents and children for raising so much money.”
Mrs Lawrence, the history lead, led the school in a two-minute silence on Monday 11th November and coordinated the whole school to decorate poppies. As well as a special remembrance assembly, staff organised a fun run for the children and arranged a staff raffle. Children either dressed in red during a non-uniform day or attended school in their service uniform.
On Saturday 9th November, Mr Marshall and Ms Dowd, Deputy Headteacher, went to an annual Remembrance Mass at St Augustine’s church in Ramsgate to remember the WW1 and WW2 men and women who fell and previously went to St Ethelbert’s school and St Augustine’s School.
Parents and children were invited to attend the service. The leader of Thanet District Council and Assistant Headteacher of Ursuline College in Westgate also attended the service.
On Armistice Day Mr Marshall and Ms Dowd together with the Head Boy and Head Girl, Deputy Head Boy, Deputy Head Girl and Mrs Cayley went to St George’s Church Ramsgate to lay the school wreath made by Year 6.
