Ramsgate (Heritage Regeneration) Trust has awarded £1,000 to the St Lawrence Clock Restoration Appeal .
The grants is in recognition of the appeal reaching a landmark £10,000 in the quest to restore the four 127-year-old clock faces on the tower at St Laurence-in-Thanet church.
The St Lawrence High Street church had the four dial clock installed in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee.
Most towers only have one dial, including Canterbury Cathedral, but St Laurence can boast four after it was paid for by public subscription and built by G. J. Smith and Sons, Midland Steam Clock Works, Derby.
Unfortunately, after 127 years of weathering the faces have become blackened making it difficult to see the markings and figures.
In 2022, to mark the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, it was decided to have another public appeal for the restoration of the clock.
Clock Appeal chair, Freda Parker, thanked the Trust for their generosity, citing not only the money itself but all the other assistance that RHRT has given in the past, such as printing and loan of equipment.
She said: “They have been behind us all the way and we are so grateful for their help and support. We still have a long way to go to reach our target of £90,000 but this donation and others we have received recently have brought it that much closer.
“We are confident that the residents of St Lawrence will, one day in the not too distant future, be able to look up and see the clock in all its former glory.”
St Laurence-in-Thanet Church is the oldest in Ramsgate. It was founded in 1062 and is Grade I listed.

i am afraid mr x beat me to it , the church are always rattling the tin , its high time they trumped up a few quid , as he rightly said they are minted , but with the bad press they have had this week they probably have more to worry about ,they will all be trying to hang on to thier jobs , and crack on with the cover up.
Perhaps the church should bring back Sunday Schools.
At the very least, they could teach English grammar and spelling.
