A prolific Margate author has published three new children’s books inspired by her playful Siberian husky – with one more due to come out before Christmas.
Mum-of-one Gina Dickerson has been a full-time author for more than a decade since the publication of the first book of her Eastcove Lies series, based on Margate, in 2012.
Also a designer for other writers and an illustrator, Gina’s catalogue includes darker fantasy tales for teens and adults including the Mortiswood Tales series which are partly set in Margate, Always Golden, The Pennington Christmas Curse, and Underleaf.
And there is more – Gina has published poetry and short stories as well as newspaper articles and a fashion and shopping column.
The new books, aimed at five to 10-year-olds, are fun tales and illustrations based on the 45-year-old’s husky Jona.
Gina said: “I had a husky before which became my wolf in the Mortiswood Tales but Jona, who is three now, is so playful and fun that I thought it would be nice to make him into these children’s stories.
“I’ve written 11 books for teens and adults and these three for children. It is different as you are not putting in quite so much (detail) but keeping it slightly simpler, not too simple though because you want children to learn through reading.
“When I was young I always had my head in a book and I want children to love these stories and illustrations.
“Jona’s Tales are fun and I enjoyed writing them. They take about a month, the books are 80 pages long, and have a similar length to The Twits (Roald Dahl). They are long enough for slightly older readers to read on their own or for parents to read a chapter to younger children.”
Each book is a standalone tale with Jona and the Disappearing Dartmoor Ponies; Jona and the Howl-o-Ween Hound and Jona and the Mysterious Mansion. Book four, Jona and the Christmas Presence, is due to hit the shelves next month.
Alongside the Jona tales, Gina is working on another poetry collection; the final book of the Mortiswood series – although there may be a spin off book featuring character, Bran the necromancer- and producing cover designs for other authors
The former council planning enforcement assistant is also looking forward to a new addition to the family when her 24-year-old son’s baby arrives.
