The Goose in Ramsgate is closed while undergoing a refurb and will return in mid-October with a new name as well as a new look.
The Harbour Street pub, which is owned by Stonegate, has been taken on by leasehold tenants David Lengyel and friend Sam Bagley who aim to create Slice – a ‘community hub’ with a food focus.
The venue is currently being stripped out, painted, plastered and having a new kitchen and feature wall installed alongside a deep clean to bring Slice to life.
The ‘back’ room area will become a community space for local groups and organisations which will be free to use. There will also be a coffee club, with refillable coffee, and a screen for those who may want to plug in to give a group presentation.
Sam, who moved from Rochester to Ramsgate this month with partner Tony and their dog, said: “We want to embrace the community and have reached out to organisations like Pilgrims Hospices and Porchlight.
“We will have a useable space for the community and we want to have a coffee club Monday to Friday with comfortable sofas and refillable coffees, somewhere for mums who have dropped the kids off to school and others who might want a coffee and a pastry.
“David is an amazing chef and he is looking at different types of food for the menu.
“We’ll be doing pizzas by the slice, so one person could have as many slices with different toppings that they want, there will be burgers, chicken, vegan, we want to break the mould a bit.”
David, who comes from Hungary, has worked at established hospitality businesses including Honest Burgers, GBK and Vapiano (pizza and pasta).
Sam, who works in the NHS, says there will also be handcrafted cocktails and the venue will be totally dog friendly, having free water and biscuits plus a doggie menu for the more discerning pup!
Sam and David are estimating a £40,000-£50,000 investment to turn The Goose into Slice. Sam said: “It will be totally different. There will be comfy sofas and you can watch TV and relax, not just spend your money and leave.”
A railing is also planned on the pavement outside the property so outdoor seating and heaters can be put in place.
Slice will still show the football and there will be 90s themed nights and music. There are also plans to install a stage early next year. The venue, which Sam says is aimed at ‘mid market dining for everyone.’ will initially have a midnight closing time.
Sam says she and Tony, who also works in the hospitality industry, wanted to live nearer the coast so the move to Ramsgate made sense after she and David decided to take the lease with Stonegate for the Harbour Street property.
She added that there may be more than one Slice to come with plans to open further venues in the future.
All current staff will be staying on at the business.

Why the obsession with sofas? They take up a lot of space and they’re great for midday naps, but they’re pretty impractical for eating, drinking and everyday activities.
The “dog friendly” bit puts me off.
Excellent. Remain put-off
More room for another canine
That’s interesting. If you don’t want to share the environment with man’s best friend, then maybe they could market it as a Checksfield-free zone!
Three things to keep me away: (a) Dogs, (b) Kids, (c) a TV, (d) Ramsgate
And accurate counting.
The pub that is no longer a pub. No mention of any booze, only poncy cocktails and slices of pizza. Ugh, another pub bites the dust.
As much as i love animals they should not be allowed in food outlets, some weeks ago we were in a sea front cafe when a couple came in with their dog no sooner we started eating our breakfast their dog lifted his legs up the table leg leaving a big puddle on the floor. The owner said “ he’s never done that before “ they then finished their drinks and walked out”
I wish them success, they have their own business ideas and other ideas. Sofas i am not sure about but Ok for a siesta. Its a decent sized ground floor trading area iirc its a lock up pub with no accomodation for managers = sofas !.
Personally i would have waited for RR’s budget later this year.
My partner and myself have dogs, Bennie & Dormie we never take them into pubs that do food, have carpets, soft furnishings.
Not getting our winter fuel benefit now. Relocating to a sunny country next week, not saying where thou. The dogs love it there!.

Congrats, make sure you enjoy it and don’t keep coming back here to moan about things you’re leaving behind for sunnier climes.
whata name for a establishment in ramsgate ! slice for christs sake , why not call it stab and slice ?
OH NOES, NOT PIZZA SLICES, WHATEVER WILL WE DO REAL WORLD?!
Well as with any new venture I wish them the best of luck but think that given time they will realise this plan is just a bit too ‘busy’ couches/soft furnishings, kids and dogs do not make a good mix. community groups, mums n kids, dogs, pizza, coffee, cocktails, a stage, a screen bla bla all a bit unfocuses and hectic sounding to me, but stranger places have worked so who knows, but I will never eat in a place allows pets (or kids lol)
the thought of having something to eat in a dog infested area puts me off before it opens , how long will it be before someone is bitten , or goes home home covered in fleas , i think i will pass on this one , for many reasons
‘I doubt your custom will be missed’ said every establishment in Ramsgate and beyond.
Real World, given your perma online status, one is surprised you make it out of the house.
The idea of a place with beer, dogs, pizza and not people like real world and pete sounds perfect!
Pizza, yuk.
Mission completed.
The food is rubbish in the Goose, my local The Artillery Arms do far better food and I can’t wait to get my hands on Sandys Buns.
