Exploring, learning and friendship for St Gregory’s Reception pupils

Enjoying life at St Gregory's

A voyage of discovery is underway for children who joined St Gregory’s Catholic Primary in Margate this month.

This school year’s Reception pupils have already adapted confidently to their new environment and are embarking on their learning journey with new friends and teachers plus a real sense of purpose.

Although play learning and familiarisation is key in the first few weeks, work is centred on phonics learning using the Read Write Inc programme and basic maths skills of sorting, matching and number rhymes.

Their first topic is All About Me, while everyday life includes getting to know one another through play, finding things in common and building friendships based on this.

Laura Wright is St Gregory’s Early Years Lead. She said: “Our children are having so much fun exploring the learning environment, making new friends and showcasing their talents and interests.

“There have been lots of opportunities for the children to use the outside area during child-initiated time. Pupils have been building, playing, learning how to ride the school bikes and enjoying opportunities to support their gross motor development.

“In the classrooms we have been painting, role playing, using play-dough, sharing stories and much more.

“We are so proud of how well they have settled into school life and how they have taken all the new routines in their stride. We cannot wait to see what else this year will have in store for us.”

There are two Reception classes with Mrs Wright and fellow teacher Miss McDaid ensuring the first term at St Gregory’s is a landmark moment for the children.

Head Teacher Dave Walker said: “These are important weeks for our new children and for their families. Every effort is made to ensure a smooth transition into their new world and it is very apparent that our Reception groups are loving their time as they explore and learn and become a big part of our close-knit and supportive community.”
