RNLI and Coastguard teams attend call-outs in Westgate

Margate RNLI’s B class and D class inshore lifeboats were launched around 7.30am yesterday (Sunday 15 September) following reports of an adult male possibly in difficulties at St Mildred’s Bay Westgate.

Whitstable RNLI’s B class lifeboat along with the Coastguard rescue helicopter from Lydd Airport were also tasked.

The air and sea assets carried out a search of the shoreline and up to two cables offshore between Margate and Reculver Towers while Coastguard Rescue Teams from Margate, Herne Bay and Deal conducted searches on shore.

Around three hours into the incident enquiries by coastguard officers and Kent Police established that the initial call was a false alarm with good intent and the rescue units were stood down.

As the units were returning to station one of the coastguard rescue teams attended a medical incident on the beach at Westgate and Margate’s B class lifeboat along with the paramedic from the coastguard helicopter which landed on the clifftop nearby provided casualty care support until the person was handed into the care of South East Coast Ambulance Service.
