A new group has been launched with the aim of helping struggling families and those who are homeless in Thanet.

Helping Hands community group has been set up by Margate pub landlord Jonathon Wood following a successful meal and food supplies day.

Jonathon, who is at the helm of the Northern Belle, husband Jason and staff at the Mansion Street pub provided home-cooked food served for free for anyone in need on August 22.

The event was supported by family, friends, customers, Margate mayor and mayoress Cllr Jack Packman and Karen Brinkman, County Councillor Barry Lewis and veteran healthy, affordable food provider Sharon Goodyer.

Family and friends pitched in for the free meals day

Following that successful day, Jonathon, 39, says he now wants to do more to help others. He has set up the community group aimed at giving food, clothing, sleeping bags  and toys and clothing for children to those who need it.

Jonathon said: “We are hoping Helping Hands will become a group where we help struggling families, the homeless and the less fortunate.

“We are doing our first raffle (at the pub) to raise money for future events. We hope to have a charity shop where once a week there will be someone coming in to talk to anyone who needs advice and people can come for food or sleeping things.”

Donations of goods are welcome.
