Weeks of thoughtful planning have ensured a perfect start for little children enjoying life in Nursery and Reception classes at Newington Community Primary in Ramsgate.
Teachers, support staff and parents worked together to make certain young pupils enjoyed a happy, settled and welcoming start to life in their new school.
Head Teacher Hannah Tudor said: “Transition started back in June when the school devised new plans for our starters and worked closely with inclusion services to ensure that all their needs were met.
“This was an important opportunity to get to know parents and children prior to the big step into school in September.
“Children’s classes have been very carefully chosen based on their needs and the transition days held in July really helped the team to plan the classes carefully.
“Home visits supported the transition which saw our new intake enjoy morning sessions at first in their new classes at the start of term – all our pupils adapted brilliantly which is a testament to the amount of preparation that we carried out effectively.
“By the start of term all staff had a really strong idea of the children’s needs and interests and parents have been central to the process. They have really supported us in getting to know their children well and the transition has been hugely positive.”
Children have been learning classroom routines and staff have been encouraging them to build independence quickly with aspects of school life including using the toilet and hand washing. The new groups have got to know the classroom (and where their favourite resources are kept) very quickly. They are exploring both indoor and outdoor learning areas very confidently and it has been clear to see friendship groups forming already.
Miss Tudor added: “It has been a true pleasure for us all to see how quickly our youngest children have settled in as part of our Newington community. Full credit goes to the staff and parents working in partnership so closely to ensure a smooth transition.
“Parents have been unbelievably supportive of the school and our transition plans, resulting in a really positive start – we could not have asked for it to have gone any better.
“Staff are now getting to know the children fully and working to develop independence whilst also assessing each child’s starting points so that we can measure the progress they will inevitably make this term.”
