Multi-agency search carried out in Westbrook Bay following concerns over missing teenager

Police, Margate RNLI crews, Margate and Herne Bay Coastguard and the Coastguard helicopter from Lydd took part in a search for a teenage girl reported missing last night (December 28).

The youngster was reported missing from Margate at 9.20pm.

RNLI and Coastguard assistance was called in at 10pm to carry out a search of the Westbrook area after concerns that the girl may have entered the water.

The youngster was found safe in Ramsgate at around midnight.

A Margate RNLI spokesperson said: “Margate RNLI’s D class and B class lifeboats were launched around 10pm last night to search for a missing person in the Westbrook Bay area.

“Reports indicated the person may have entered the sea and an intensive shoreline and close inshore waters search was carried out by the lifeboats along with coastguard rescue teams from Margate and Herne Bay, the coastguard rescue helicopter from Lydd Airport and Kent Police.

“After around an hour of searching the person was located safe ashore and the units were stood down and returned to station.

“If you have cause for concern for anyone or see someone possibly in difficulties near the sea do not hesitate – dial 999 and ask for coastguard.”

A Kent Police spokesperson added: “This was in relation to a search for a teenage child reported missing from Margate at .9.20pm. She was safely located at around midnight in the Ramsgate area.”
