Prison for man who attacked woman in her Margate home telling her she was going to die

Jailed: Kevin Friend

A man who wrapped his hands around a woman’s neck and told her she was going to die during an assaulot in her Margate home has been jailed for one year and 10 months.

Kevin Friend assaulted the woman at her home in Margate on October 26, 2019, after they had been to a pub in the town.

The 32-year-old, of Defiant Close, Hawkinge, was jailed at Canterbury Crown Court yesterday (February 12) after pleading guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm at a previous hearing.

Friend and his victim were known to each other and had returned to her home after drinking together on the day of the assault. Friend then said he wanted to buy some drugs, prompting the victim to ask him to leave.

He then turned violent and dragged the victim through the property by her hair, before wrapping his hands around her neck and telling her she was going to die.

She managed to break free from him and ran away, seeking help from a neighbour. Police arrived soon after and arrested Friend at the scene.

Detective Constable Julie Bonello, Kent Police’s investigating officer, said: “This assault took place in the victim’s own home and left her badly injured and shaken.

“We welcome the prison sentence and call on anyone who has suffered violence from people they know to report it to us. We will always work to support victims and find a solution that works for them.”
