Man charged with Cliftonville murder of Birchington dad Mark Miles

Police taped off an area at Sandhurst Place and the Aldi car park in Cliftonville

Detectives investigating a death in Cliftonville have charged a man with murder.

At 2am yesterday (October 12) Kent Police was called to a report of a disturbance at a flat in Sandhurst Place, where a man was reported to have been seriously injured after being stabbed with a broken bottle.

Officers attended along with South East Coast Ambulance Service but the injured man, 44-year-old Mark Miles, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Richard McAuley, 23, of Northdown Road, Cliftonville, was arrested a short distance away and taken into custody.

Both he and Mr Miles were known to one another.

The Crown Prosecution Service has now authorised a charge of murder against Mr McAuley (pictured above) following an investigation by detectives from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate.

He has also been charged with assaulting a woman during the same incident. She was not seriously injured

Mr McAuley will appear before Medway magistrates tomorrow ( October 14).

Numerous tributes have been paid to Mr Miles, a dad and husband who lived in Birchington, who friends say was “lovely and kind.”
