Gearing up for the 2019 Ramsgate RNLI junior fishing competition

GETTING READY: Jason and Dawn Parrott, Bruce Sales of Fisherman's Corner and Mike Harrison

This year’s junior boat fishing competition in aid of Ramsgate RNLI is taking place on Friday, August 23.

Organisers are already gearing up for the big event following the pick up of 55 fishing rods from Fishermans Corner in Ramsgate today (August 14).

The event is organised by RNLI volunteer Jason Parrott and wife Dawn with help from Newington’s Mike Harrison.

The competition, sailing from Ramsgate harbour, is for youngsters aged up to 15 and angling experience is not necessary as there will be experienced anglers on hand to help and advise.

Competitors are asked to get sponsors and all money raised goes to Ramsgate RNLI. A trophy is awarded to the winning Skipper.

Following the competition there will be a barbecue and prize-giving, courtesy of Lady Ann charter boat of Ramsgate.

2018 winner James, aka The Captain

Last year a total of over £4,600 was raised for Ramsgate RNLI and local firms and individuals were generous with donations of prizes and food for the barbecue afterwards. There were 55 entries and everyone won a prize.

This year there are already more than 70 entries.

Jason said: “This is our third year and we want to grow it and make it bigger and better and teach the juniors sea safety that could save a life or two.

“We are looking for people to donate to the event so we can ensure all entrants receive a prize, last year we had some very generous donations and hope to do even better this year.”

Mike added: “We live in a seaside town and the lifeboat is an integral part of life here and it is important to support them.”

Anyone with child who would like to take part can get consent and sponsor forms from Newington Community Centre, Fishermans Corner, or the Ramsgate RNLI Lifeboat station.
