An axe has been seized by police and a man remains in custody following an incident in Ramsgate this afternoon (April 17).

Kent Police was called to reports of a man seen with an axe in the High Street, at around 3pm. Officers attended and arrested a 43-year-old man on suspicion of the possession of an offensive weapon.

It is understood the man had already been disarmed by members of the public.

The Isle of Thanet News was told: “There were two people who followed him and managed to get him to drop the axe before police got there. They did this with no thought for their own safety, rather in the hope that no one got hurt.”

There were no reports of any injuries and the man remains in police custody.
