Busy day at Newlands Primary School with visit from Ramsgate Mayor

Ramsgate mayor Pat Moore presents a pupil an award at the school council meeting

Children at Newlands Primary welcomed a special visitor when Ramsgate’s Mayor, Patricia Moore, came to the school.

The Mayor had a busy morning, enjoying a Newlands’ celebration assembly, attending a school council meeting and finally joining staff for coffee and cake to support their Macmillan charity coffee morning.

During assembly the Mayor helped Headteacher David Bailey hand out awards linked to the school’s values of Responsibility, Empathy, Success, Perseverance, Enthusiasm, Creativity and Teamwork.

At a specially convened meeting of the School Council, the Mayor commended the children on their recent road safety initiative and encouraged them to suggest ways in which the Mayor and the School Council could work together to support local food banks.

Children had researched the Mayor ahead of her visit and asked her about a range of issues. Topics of conversation included the recent teacher strikes, promoting Ramsgate across Europe, knitting projects for the QEQM special care baby unit and the Mayor’s favourite hat, which her foster dog destroyed!

Mr Bailey said: “It was delightful to hear the school council’s thought provoking questions. The children are excited to get to work on their next project and hope to get the Mayor involved as this progresses.”

After the Mayor had been grilled by the School Council it was time for cake! Newlands is currently raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support, ahead of Mr Bailey joining a TKAT team in the London Landmarks Half Marathon on April 7th.
