A Ramsgate hair salon is marking 20 years in business with 20 industry awards and initiatives for mental health wellbeing and community fitness included in its journey.
Obsessions Salon in York Street celebrates the landmark birthday on May 4. Founded by Jennifer Kerr, who began her journey as a passionate 14-year-old working Saturdays in a modest shop, Obsessions Salon has blossomed into a sanctuary known for its inclusive and nurturing environment.
Under Jennifer’s guidance and ownership the salon has garnered some 20 distinguished awards, including being named the Best Salon in the UK for the past two years, the Best Salon in Kent for the last three and Community Mental Health Champions 2024.
Obsessions mental health initiative is a training scheme called “Salon Minds” Crafted by Jennifer and her husband Jamie Kerr, a leading mental wellbeing coach and founder of MindKite, the program aims to equip stylists with skills to foster impactful conversations and steering client interactions from negativity to inspiration. It also focuses on personal development, teaching stylists to establish boundaries that protect their family time and personal happiness.
Jennifer said: “Our stylists often become confidants, hearing both joyous and challenging personal stories. It’s crucial they don’t carry this emotional weight home. We teach them to leave inspired, not burdened.”
Obsessions has also created initiatives including an early morning sea swimming club and has involvement in the Thanet Girls Run Club to highlight their commitment to mental and physical health.
The programs provide exercise but also help build social connections and friendships.
Jennifer says she plans to integrate more wellness activities within the salon’s walls. Ideas include hosting yoga classes, establishing a book club, or creating a women’s business club.
She said: “(These) are all driven by my desire to offer spaces where individuals can grow, achieve, and connect in a supportive environment.”
To celebrate the 20th year Obsessions is offering hair makeovers for 20 women.
