Outdoor reading corner created at Upton Junior School

Upton now has a reading 'haven'

A quiet haven for children who love to read during their break times has been created at Upton Junior School in Broadstairs.

Staff gave up their weekend to dig up an overgrown area to provide the dedicated space for pupils of all ages.

It is close to the school near an overhanging tree and features wooden seating, creating a lovely peaceful setting.

Wickes building supplies provided slate flooring and a membrane for the project at a reduced rate for the school.

Jo Lane from Wickes joined Deputy Head of School Dave Walker at an opening ceremony with children. She said: “We are delighted to support this project.

“Reading plays an incredibly important role in developing literacy skills in children and preparing them for the future.”

Mr Walker added: “Not every pupil wants to rush around during their break times – some prefer to read or at least have the opportunity to do so.

“This designated outdoor area will allow them to enjoy time reading to their heart’s content.

“Upton continues to expand literacy opportunities for our pupils, and this is just one of a number of reading-based projects we’re involved with developing this year.”
