Pupils and staff at Garlinge Primary School and Nursery have continued their annual tradition of commemorating Remembrance Day on Tuesday 11th November.
In the week leading up to the day, children and staff were able to purchase poppies and Remembrance merchandise, with all proceeds donated to the Royal British Legion.
The whole school gathered for a special Remembrance assembly, joined by Mrs Graham (Chair of Governors), Mr Herbert, the Mayor of Margate and Reverend Anand of St James’ Church.
Head Boy, Harry, and Head Girl, Dulcie, read two poignant poems, In Flanders Fields and For the Fallen. This was followed by a moving performance of The Last Post by Mr Shepherd, after which the school observed a perfectly kept two-minute silence.
Later in the day, the Head Boy and Head Girl, along with their Deputies, accompanied Heads of School, Mrs Northrop and Mr Cope, and the History Lead, Mrs Greenfield, to the war memorials in Westgate and St James’ Church in Garlinge, where wreaths were laid on behalf of the school community, thanking people for their sacrifice.
Mr Cope said: “We always spend time remembering the sacrifices of those who have gone to war and it closely aligns with our school value of Respect. Our pupils also understand this sacrifice and we are proud to lay wreaths each year to mark this.”
The event is a long-standing tradition for the pupils at Garlinge. Mrs Greenfield, the school’s History Lead, said: “It makes us extremely proud to reflect on and honour those who have fought for our country and sacrificed their lives. Our children and staff feel humbled to contribute in supporting members of the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, and their families.”
