A magical history tour back to the early 20th century transformed part of St Gregory’s Catholic Primary in Margate.
The high tech learning of 2024 was replaced by a typical day’s education from the 1900s as children experienced how times have changed in the last century.
For the Key Stage 1 group this included investigating what classroom life was like in the past, comparing similarities and differences with today’s schools, and even talking with a visitor who once attended St Gregory’s.
A special School in the Past day saw children and teachers embracing the olden days, wearing period costume, with their experiences being captured in black and white photos.
The day was filled with engaging activities including making paper dolls, nature observation drawings, rote learning with chalk, playing traditional playground games like hopscotch and marbles, and even undergoing hand and nail inspections, just like in the old days.
To complete their experience, discussed how they felt about the structure of leaning 1900s-style and expressed their thoughts on whether they would have preferred going to school in the past or not.
Key Stage 1 leader Rachel Farawi said: “It was a fantastic learning experience for everyone involved, bringing history to life in a fun and educational way.”
Head Teacher Dave Walker said: “Comparing and contrasting educational and social values from the start of the last century to the present was thought-provoking and interesting for our pupils.
“A lot of effort went in to creating an old style school feel for the day and our pupils and teachers embraced the initiative and shared a fascinating and fun peep into the past.”
