The Victorian shelter at Marine Drive in Margate and the area above it at Albert Terrace has been sealed off while structural checks take place.
Kent County Council says it needs to be satisfied that the structure is still safe for public use.
A Kent County Council (KCC) spokesperson said: “Albert Terrace has been temporarily closed as a precaution while we carry out checks on the shelter structure.
“Given its age and location on the seafront, we need to be satisfied that the shelter is safe for public use and that we have the necessary structural information and assessments in place.
“Until this work has been completed, the area will remain closed to protect public safety.”
UPDATE: The area has now been reopened (August 17, midday)
Will probably end up to be left rotting away, like the Lido has been for decades.
Soon to be taken over by a DFL to turn it into a gallery/bar/smashyburger/exotic food/night club…delete as appropriate

Sad, can remember when it used to be a nice place where the elderly/families sat back in the 1980’s, then it became a hangout for yobbos in the 1990’s & eventually the local addicts.

Maybe TDC are going to spruce it all up and make it far more welcoming for the homeless community ready for the City of Sanctuary project.

Think, decision to restrict this public amenity seems like an urgent knee-jerk responsive reaction. Not a pre-planned inspection, but something has prompted a survey inspection or another reason to restrict this area.
There again, it may h ave been preplanned months ago for a multitude of semi-plausible internal chats~

When will Andrew’s Passage be reopened? It’s a Public Right of Way yet has been shut for decades and is only a stone’s throw from the shelter. Can KCC comment? No, most likely.
