Environmental awareness is a positive initiative that runs throughout life at St Gregory’s Catholic Primary in Margate.
In the latest project each class has planted three young trees in the grounds with more planned for the forest school learning area.
Thirty Cherry blossom and Rowan saplings were donated by the Woodland Trust and children are eager to help with their ongoing care and have already been watering them.
The trees are protected by specially-made frames made by caretaker Stuart Langley and these structures will ensure the saplings grow strong and sturdy.
Teacher Zoe Whiteing explained: “We were delighted to receive the generous donation. To make this experience even more meaningful, our Key Stage One children first explored the life and work of Kenyan environmentalist Wangari Maathai as part of their science learning.
“She recognised the vital role trees play in protecting our planet. She founded the Green Belt Movement, encouraging communities, especially women, to plant trees to improve their environment, provide resources, and combat climate change.
“Her work earned her the Nobel Peace Prize and continues to inspire environmental action around the world.
“Inspired by her story, carefully selected suitable planting areas, learning about what trees need to grow and how they benefit wildlife and the environment.
“This hands-on experience not only supported their Science learning but also helped them understand the importance of caring for the natural world, just as Wangari Maathai encouraged.”
The forest school area is being planted out by Teaching Assistant Fiona Kirton who is working with pupils to expand the space.
The Woodland Trust said: “Trees help people and nature thrive. Getting more in the ground will give us all a greener, healthier future.”
“Trees keep us cool in summer, clean our air and help reduce flooding. They encourage more wildlife with food and shelter, boost our physical and mental health, and help fight climate change too.”
