Since September, nursery staff and children at St Ethelbert’s Catholic Primary and Nursery in Ramsgate have been on a mission to transform the nursery outdoor learning environment.
They have worked together to zone the different areas and now have a wide range of learning opportunities available to them. These include literacy, maths, water and sand play, a music area, mud kitchen, a reading den, role play, construction and an ‘understanding the world’ area with a sensory/fairy garden where the children have helped to plant herbs, fruit and vegetables.
Nursery teacher and Early Years Lead, Miss Rees, also organised a painting afternoon, where she invited the parents into the garden to join the children and help paint the fences and other areas.
Miss Rees says that as well as the brightening up of the garden the new areas have had a significant positive impact on the children’s engagement and learning.
She added: “The children are demonstrating excellent independence in managing their own learning and environment and they are really enjoying being able to taste the herbs that they have planted themselves.”
