Kent Fire and Rescue Service has tackled a blaze with tyres alight on land off Grinsell Hill in Ramsgate, near Sevenscore, with crew remaining on the scene for more than 12 hours.
The blaze was first reported at 9pm last night (May 13) with three engines sent to the scene and one staying until 9.45am today while the fire burned out.
Nik Mitchell, of the Get Wild social media platform, caught the incident on camera and said: “You could see the thick black smoke for absolute miles.
“There was a massive fire burning in an area of wasteland in Ramsgate—it looked like a pile of dumped tyres. It was raging flames for ages.”
The field was at one time used for a go cart circuit with the tyres remaining when that use stopped.
Kent Fire and Rescue Service says the cause of the blaze in ‘not yet known.’
A fire service spokesperson said: “Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to a pile of tyres alight in a field near Grinsell Hill, in Ramsgate.
“Three fire engines attended, and crews used a hose reel jet and compressed air foam to tackle the fire, and prevent fire spread.
“One fire engine remained at the scene overnight to maintain a watching brief, while the remainder of the fire burned out under controlled conditions.
“There were no reported injuries, and the cause is not yet known.”
