Cliftonville pupils secure supermarket support for healthy eating scheme

Thanks to the youngsters and Morrisons there will be free fruit for Key Stage 2 pupils

A group of enterprising pupils at Cliftonville Primary have taken an inspiring step towards promoting healthier lifestyles in their school community.

During a recent Healthy Habits meeting, the school welcomed Lorraine from Morrisons, following a student-led campaign to improve access to nutritious snacks. Keen to encourage better eating habits, the children had written to several local supermarkets asking for support in providing free fruit to Key Stage 2 pupils.

Currently, all Key Stage 1 pupils receive free fruit funded by the government but this ends when they move to Year 3.

Their efforts paid off when Morrisons responded with a generous £500 donation to the initiative. Lorraine visited the school to present the contribution, much to the excitement of both pupils and staff.

Andrea Frith, Assistant Headteacher and lead on the Healthy Habits project, said: “We’re delighted to work with Morrisons on this exciting and important scheme and are so grateful for their generous donation.”

Over the coming weeks, the children will play an active role in shaping the project by selecting their favourite fruits. These will be made available to pupils at breaktimes throughout Term 6, helping to embed healthy choices into everyday school life.

The initiative has been praised as a fantastic example of young people taking positive action, while also fostering a sense of community support and wellbeing across the school.
