Thanet artist Suzanne Baker will exhibit more than 60 paintings at Pie Factory gallery in Margate next month.
Time to Look features works made by Suzanne Baker, dating from 1998 to the present. She paints narratives in oils in a loose, intuitive way, working frequently from personal memories.
Other paintings in the show have mythological subjects including a series about Callisto and Arcas, based on Ovid’s Metamorphoses.
Born in Hampshire in 1946, Suzanne lived and studied in London, moving to Thanet five years ago. Her degree in Graphic Design from UAL (London College of Printing) gave her opportunities in publishing and she became Art Director at Vogue Magazine, leaving that world in 1996 to focus on painting.
She has since studied at New York Studio School, and the Turps Studio programme and took part in numerous short courses at The Royal Drawing School.
One of the paintings featured is Walking to Pegwell.
Suzanne says: “Pegwell is a place near to where I live, and I walk there frequently. I wanted to make a painting about the feeling of that walk, without needing to be there drawing it.”
Confusion at the Oberoi is based on a memory of being at Hotel Oberoi, Mumbai when there was a terrorist attack.
Many people died but Suzanne and her partner were rescued by staff.
A memory of a different kind is portrayed in Fun and Games based Suzanne and a boyfriend being at her home when she was 15 and having to listen out for her parents.
Time to Look runs from May 14-18, 11am to 6pm daily (2pm – 6pm 14th May).
