Kent County Council will be carrying out a series of resurfacing works along the A299 Thanet Way during June and July to improve road safety and driving conditions.
The works are designed to repair areas of uneven road surface caused by the clay soil under the road. While resurfacing is not a permanent long‑term solution, it will improve driving quality and safety for road users while longer-term options continue to be explored.
The works will take place in a series of phases between 1 June and 21 July, covering multiple sections in both the London‑bound and coast‑bound directions.
The timing has been planned to avoid conflicts with other National Highways work taking place in the area and to ensure they are completed ahead of the school summer holidays.
To ensure the works can be carried out safely, night-time road closures will be required while resurfacing takes place. All closures will be clearly signed, and road users are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and follow diversion routes where necessary.
Once the resurfacing works are completed and it is safe to do so, the temporary speed restrictions currently in place will be removed and the road will return to the national speed limit of 70mph.
Peter Osborne, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “The A299 is a vital route for residents, businesses and visitors travelling to and from east Kent. These resurfacing works will make a meaningful difference to driving conditions and help keep people safe.
“We recognise the inconvenience road closures can cause, which is why these works are being carefully phased and carried out overnight wherever possible. Thank you to everyone for their patience while we carry out these essential improvements.”

Not a fan of this, it’s been way more fun driving on the Thanet Way in recent months and much cheaper than the bumper cars Dreamland. This will cost millions and ruin the fun for everyone.
Closing the thanet way for road repairs. How about Closing all of thanet for road resurfacing. I always thought paying road tax was for road repairs. So why are our roads so bad . You need an off road vehicle for most roads .
Nope, ‘road tax’ is collected by the DVLA and goes to the Exchequer. Non-motorway road repairs in Kent are done by KCC whose money comes from a combination of council tax and whatever other funding they get from government.
Will do another bodge job ….back to current state within a year ….
Can’t wait until it’s up to 70 again but how long until they’ll drop it to 50 again? Absolute incompetence. They’ve been bodging it for years. For the amount They’ve spent on bodges it probably could have been fixed properly.
For goodness sake, just get on and fix the road perminently, rather than all of these short term costly fixes.
It should be done properly along with all the roads in Thanet. The roads are disgraceful.
