ARK, Cliftonville’s Cultural Space in Albion Road, is to host a range of events as part of the UK’s inaugural Jewish Culture Month.
Jewish Culture Month will take place across the UK from Saturday 16 May to Tuesday 16 June inclusive and focus on a range of themes including British Jewish contributions to music, literature, food, history, fashion, architecture and comedy.
It is aimed at people of all faiths and backgrounds.
ARK, which is based in a former synagogue, will be showing the 1973 animated film ‘Where the Wild Things Are’, with a live audience-created soundtrack. The book was written by Jewish author Maurice Sendak.
The film showing is aimed at 4–12-year-olds, and those attending will use instruments and their voices to create sound effects.
The film will be shown on Sunday May 24 with two viewings at 12 noon and 2pm, with ticketing information on ARK’s website in due course.
ARK will also host other events to mark Jewish Culture Month.
ARK director, Jan Ryan, said: “We are delighted to be taking part in the first ever Jewish Culture Month.
“Based in the former Margate synagogue, ARK is proud to celebrate the rich heritage of our building.
“Expect a family music event based around the film of Maurice Sendak’s unforgettable book, ‘Where the Wild Things Are’, an opportunity to learn some Jewish dances from Eastern Europe and a programme of films including David Baddiel’s The Infidel, starring Omid Djalili.”
Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport of the United Kingdom, Lisa Nandy MP, said: “I’m really pleased to support the first UK Jewish Culture Month and look forward to its success among people of all faiths and communities.”
Jewish Culture Month is a project of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, the national representative body of the UK Jewish community.

Checksfield, calm down, and where were you when I was working as a volunteer with Migrant Helpline, or the Kent Refugee Support Group, or as part of the team at the Dover Detainee Visitor Group? The last is a Napolionic prison for refused asylum seekers mostly, and I would often be the only white person in there, apart from the Prison Officers! Old I may be, now well into my ninth decade, but still fighting injustice, and racism, and especially against the Israeli Genocide in Gaza, which is responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent Palestinian men, women, children, and babies. And I donate monthly to Refugee Action, Medical Aid for Palestinians, Action Aid (a charity for women and girl refugees) Whats your contribution to world peace then, still dressing up in womens clothes, or have you stopped transferring to the opposite sex you were born with?
Forgot, I was also active in the 70’s with the Anti NAZI league, although I was never a member of the Socialist Workers Party. We stood against the National Front, who deliberatly provoked violence, some was out of hand. I stopped after Blair Peach was killed by the police who were protecting the National Front yobs!
