‘A Stroke of Luck’
Now until March 15, Pie Factory Gallery in Margate, 10am – 5pm daily
Dad-of-two Sam d’Amato suffered a stroke last July and a large part of his recovery came from painting with 10-year-old daughter Daisy – resulting in ‘A Stroke of Luck’ exhibition.
During the weekend Daisy’s friends and classmates will visit the gallery to take part in creating a painting together. There will also be fun competitions and activities for families.
The art features bold, luminous works on surfboards and canvases, capturing oceans, waves, and playful experiments in colour, alongside more reflective pieces that tell a story of courage, family and love.
Some pieces are inspired by the calm the sea has provided, some the madness of a stroke, and others by family. Son Oscar, 14, and wife Ella have also created a piece each to be included in the show.
The majority of pieces are by Sam and Daisy, who is a St Lawrence College student after gaining an art and drama scholarship
Part of the proceeds from the exhibition will support The Stroke Association.

Being arty hippie types, they are ill-equipped to provide the standards expected by the guests, Annie and Neil, who, having driven from Buxton to attend a funeral, were hoping for something a bit more in their ‘class’. Despite the many shortcomings, they manage to weather it, and the quirky abode even brings out a playful side in their relationship.

Saturday Kids Clay Club

Drop the kids off and release their inner potter for a creative session working with real clay.
These classes offer an exciting opportunity for children to explore and develop their own creative ideas through the medium of clay in a professional studio space with inspiring tutors. The sessions will include hand building, sculpting and throwing on the potters wheel, as well as an exploration into decorative techniques.
The sessions are suitable for 6-11 year olds.

Purcell ‘Dido and Aeneas’
14th March, 7.30pm, Holy Trinity Church in Broadstairs
The Thanet Festival Choir presents Purcell ‘Dido and Aeneas’ which is Purcell’s only true opera, and his only all-sung dramatic work. The dates of the composition and first performance of the opera are uncertain, but it was certainly composed no later than July 1688. The story is based on Book IV of Virgil’s Aeneid and recounts the love of Dido, Queen of Carthage, for the Trojan hero Aeneas and her despair when he abandons her. It features the famous aria ‘When I am laid in earth’, popularly known as Dido’s Lament’.
Renowned Chelys Consort of Viols will be joining the Thanet Festival Choir for this performance.
The title roles will be sung by Soprano Rowena Ashby and Baritone Orlando Barton Hodges.

Mother’s Day weekend at Vue Thanet
From sci-fi and romance to classic releases and early previews, there’s something for everyone to enjoy at Vue Thanet this Mother’s Day weekend .
For fans of romance, an adaptation of the best-selling book Reminders of Him will be playing over the weekend. The story follows Kenna, who after a perfect outing with her boyfriend, makes an unbearable mistake that sends her to prison. Seven years later, Kenna returns to her hometown, hoping to rebuild her life.
Sci-fi lovers can enjoy a special early preview of Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling as a science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship light-years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he realises he must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction.
Audiences can also enjoy a very modern take on the first true sci-fi novel, with The Bride! It follows a lonely Frankenstein who travels to 1930s Chicago to ask groundbreaking scientist Dr Euphronious to create a companion for him. The two revive a murdered young woman and The Bride is born.
For music fans, Baz Luhrmann’s EPiC: Elvis Presley blends restored concert footage from the King of Rock’s legendary 1970s Las Vegas residency with rare, never-before-seen clips and rediscovered audio of Presley recounting his own story. Also screening from Lurhmann is a re-release of The Great Gatsby led by Academy Award winner Leonardo DiCaprio in this adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s timeless tragedy.
For younger audiences and family trips, Hoppers follows an animal lover who uses technology to place her consciousness into a robotic beaver, uncovering mysteries within the animal world that are beyond anything they could have imagined. Also perfect for families is Angelica Huston’s unforgettable performance in the 1990 version of The Witches.
Set across dual timelines, psychological thriller In a Pale View of Hills explores a Japanese widow’s memories spanning post-war Nagasaki in the 1950s and England during 1980s Cold War era, unravelling secrets that intertwine her past and present experiences across borders.
Bringing some levity to the weekend, How to Make a Killing follows blue-collar Becket Redfellow – disowned at birth by his obscenely wealthy family – who will stop at nothing to reclaim his inheritance, no matter how many relatives stand in his way.
