An array of weird and wonderful characters celebrated World Book Day at St Gregory’s Catholic Primary in Margate.
All staff and adults joined in with the costumed pupils and outfits ranged from Harry Potter and Spiderman to Alvin and The Chipmunks, Minions and many more with Head Teacher Dave Walker dressed as an inflatable hungry caterpillar.
A variety of activities to further literacy in the school and reinforce the ongoing love of reading were held across all year groups.
These included children sharing their favourite books with each other and staff who also shared their stories with pupils.
Pupils completed work to develop their oracy and speech communication skills by choosing their favourite character and battling against each other with specially prepared speeches.
Staff created ‘Masked Reader’ videos for the young viewers to guess who is who, while children were invited to turn a simple potato into one of their favourite story book characters.
Reading Lead is Rosie Hart. She said: “Reading is an extremely important part of life at St Gregory’s and World Book Day is a fantastic opportunity each year for us to develop our love of reading even more with fun activities across the day for the children.
“The children looked fantastic in their costumes and arrived at school so excited to take part in their special event, which was lovely to see.”
Assistant Head Teacher and Head of Teaching and Learning Athanasia Papa-Adams added: “’Pupils at St Gregory’s celebrated their love of reading through a range of creative activities designed to bring books to life with the focus on oracy.
“The whole day highlighted our commitment to place reading at the heart of learning.”
