Creating imagery to illustrate outer space was a tough challenge for children at St Gregory’s Catholic Primary in Margate.
But Year 5 and 6 pupils enthusiastically blasted off into their task which aimed at encouraging them to develop ideas independently and consider the purpose of drawings to investigate how imagery was used in the ‘space race’ that began in the 1950s.
They combined collage and printmaking to create a piece in their own style, before visiting Hartsdown Academy to continue and recap their learning on printmaking.
They created a William Morris arts and crafts style motif and traced it onto polystyrene before printing it to make patterns.
Assistant Head Teacher Athanasia Papa-Adams said: “They had an enriching experience. It was wonderful to link with a local secondary school for outreach opportunities for our children to experience the facilities and extend and embed their learning.
“We link with Hartsdown Academy for a range of outreach initiatives such as art, science and cooking, and we welcome their sports leaders to support leading on our sports days.
“Visits like this give our older pupils the opportunity see life in a busy secondary school in action and close-up. Some of them are only months from moving in to the next phase of their education when they complete primary schooling in the summer and this was a valuable way to help prepare for this transition.”
